OMS Deep Ocean 2: The wing bladder for single and double bottles

(The translation into English, French, Spanish or Arabic can be found in the webshop under BLOG.)

Anyone looking for a wing suitable for virtually any dive will quickly come across a model that's causing a stir in the technical diving community: the OMS Deep Ocean 2. With its horseshoe shape, robust construction, and unique internal bungee system, this wing offers a decisive advantage over classic alternatives. But what truly makes the Deep Ocean 2 so special – and for whom is the investment worthwhile?

In this article, we explain how the retraction band system works, the specific advantages of the internal bungees in the water, and why the OMS Deep Ocean 2 performs well with both single and double tanks. All products and further information can be found directly in our webshop at www.mydive.store .

What is the OMS Deep Ocean 2?

The OMS Deep Ocean 2 is a TEC wing bladder from Ocean Management Systems (OMS), one of the leading brands in technical diving. It is manufactured in the classic horseshoe shape – a design that allows free air movement in any body position, thus promoting smooth, precise buoyancy control.

Available in black and red, the OMS Deep Ocean 2 offers two buoyancy levels:

  • 45 lbs (approx. 20 kg) – ideal for single-tank divers

  • 60 lbs (approx. 27 kg) – recommended for twin-bottle configurations

The outer protective cover is made of durable 1000 denier Cordura , which reliably protects the inner bladder from cuts and punctures. The inner bladder itself is made of polyurethane and features ultrasonically welded seams and fittings – a level of workmanship that ensures long-lasting durability.

The centerpiece: Internal bungee cords

The key feature of the Deep Ocean 2 compared to many other wings is its internal retraction band system – in short, the internal bungees. On older or simpler models, these elastic bands are located on the outside of the wing bladder. On the Deep Ocean 2 , they are integrated into the inside of the wing.

How does the bungee system work?

The bungee cords act like a spring around the air bladder. When air is released from the wing, the cords actively pull the bladder together. The tighter the bungee cords are, the more compactly the wing fits against the body – and the lower the available lift volume.

What's special about it: The diver can regulate the tension of the bungees himself. At maximum tension , the wing provides 49 lbs (approx. 22 kg) of buoyancy, while at minimum tension, 60 lbs (approx. 27 kg) are available. This allows the system to be flexibly adapted to each dive – completely without tools.

What are the advantages of an internal construction method?

Moving the bungee cords inwards has several practical consequences:

1. Reduced entanglement risk

External bungee cords can snag on lines, nets, or sharp structures in wrecks or caves. This risk is eliminated on the Deep Ocean 2, as no elastic bands protrude. This represents a significant safety improvement for technical divers operating in so-called "overhead environments."

2. Stiff profile and reduced water resistance

When full buoyancy isn't needed, the bungee system contracts the bladder into a compact shape. The result: a narrow, streamlined profile that noticeably reduces water resistance. Those who dive efficiently and want to conserve air benefit directly from this.

3. Faster venting

The tension of the bungees actively assists in releasing air. The wing reacts more directly and quickly to deflation maneuvers – a clear advantage in situations where precision is required.

4. More stable water position

A wing that hugs the body cleanly even with low airflow contributes significantly to stable trim. Especially in combination with the horseshoe shape and the donut-like internal structure, the system enables precise, responsive lift control.

Versatility: Single and double bottles

A key advantage of the horseshoe shape is its compatibility with various cylinder setups . The Deep Ocean 2 can easily be combined with both single and twin cylinders. This makes it an extremely flexible choice – especially for divers who switch between the two configurations depending on the season or dive site.

Do you enjoy diving with a single tank on vacation and switch to twin tanks for longer bottom times in your local lake? With the Deep Ocean 2, you don't need to change your wing. The bladder fits both setups – a real advantage for divers who value a well-thought-out, long-term equipment concept.

Robustness and technical details

Besides the bungee system, the Deep Ocean 2 impresses with a number of other technical details:

  • Two identical connections at the top for quick release and corrugated hose with power inflator – interchangeable if required.

  • Additional quick-release valve at the bottom for extra control when venting in different positions.

  • Flexible corrugated hose connector that can be mounted on either the right or left side – ideal for individual configurations.

  • Stainless steel eyelets and double-stitched seams for maximum durability

  • The inner urethane coating protects against abrasion and penetration.

The accompanying TEC Back Pad can be securely attached to the OMS backplate using special back pad screws and also offers a practical compartment for a buoy or lift bag. A bracket for a separate argon cylinder can be attached as an option.

Who is the OMS Deep Ocean 2 suitable for?

The Deep Ocean 2 is primarily aimed at advanced recreational and technical divers who value precision, robustness, and flexibility. It is particularly suitable for:

  • Technical divers who work with twin cylinders or stage configurations and need a reliable, responsive wing.

  • Wreck divers who maneuver in tight structures and appreciate a streamlined, snagging-free profile

  • Cave divers , for whom the risk of entanglement is a serious safety issue

  • Divers who want to switch flexibly between single and double tanks without changing the wing bladder
